The Ford government plans to make producers of waste take over Ontario’s recycling program ii six years.
Environment Minister Jeff Yurek says the new program, currently run by municipalities, will be phased in beginning in 2023.
By December 31, 2025, producers will be responsible for providing blue box services
Yurek says the move will encourage industry to change how it packages goods in order to reduce waste that goes to landfills.
Once producer responsibility’s fully in place, recycling will be more consistent with a standard list of materials that can be recycled across Ontario’s, with an estimated saving to the more than 240 municipalities of more than $125-million-a-year.
