A spokesperson adds the 85-year-old Chretien will return to Canada after treatment to remove it.
Chretien, prime minister from 1993 to 2003, was to speak at the U.S. – China Trade and Economic Relations Forum.
Instead, he was taken to hospital soon after landing in Hong Kong Monday evening.
Expanding trade with China was a theme during Chretien’s time in office and he’s continued working on business links between North America and China since returning to private life.
