She’s been many things; Grammy winner, singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist. Now, the Queen of Soul is becoming a highway.
The Michigan Legislature has voted overwhelmingly to designate a portion of the M-10 Freeway in Detroit as the “Aretha L. Franklin Memorial Highway.”
Franklin was born in Memphis, but grew up in Detroit and learned the gospel fundamentals at the New Bethel Baptist Church where her father was minister.
She died in Detroit last year at the age of 76 after battling pancreatic cancer.
