The federal government should work with the provinces and territories to create a single-payer national pharmacare plan to cover every Canadian.
That’s one of the recommendations in a just released report from an expert panel appointed by the Trudeau government.

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario’s former health minister, released the findings of the 171-page report, giving advice on how to address the patchwork of public and private prescription-drug plans.
The council calls for the creation of a new agency that would draft a national list of prescription medicines that would be covered by taxpayers, starting with an initial list of common, essential drugs, by January 1, 2022.
That list would be expanded to a fully comprehensive formulary no later than January 1, 2027.
Once fully implemented, the council predicts the amount spent on prescription drugs in Canada would fall by approximately $5-billon-a-year.
