After last summer’s surprise decision by the then new Ford government to reduce the number of city of Toronto council seats from a planned 47-seats to 25 in order to align with provincial ridings, a judge struck down the law.

However, the Ontario Court of Appeal stayed the ruling and today and Tuesday, the province’s top court will hash out the legalities of the move.

The city of Toronto wants a panel of judges to confirm the change is unconstitutional, however leave things as they are until the next election.

The province feels the legislation was a valid response to dealing with a dysfunctional council.
