Prime Minister Justin Trudeau heads to England and France this week to attend D-Day events on the 75th anniversary of the operation.
More than 14,000 Canadians were among the allied forces that landed on beaches in Normandy in Northern France on June 6th 1944 in an attempt to loosen Nazi Germany’s control over Western Europe.
The invasion, which involved more than 150,000 allied troop in total, is seen as one of the most important turning points of World War II.
Meanwhile, About 300 veterans of the Normandy invasion have left Dover in England for a six-day trip that will take them back to the landing beaches on the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
The cruise will take the veterans to Dunkirk and Poole before arriving in Portsmouth, where they will be met by world leaders for a commemoration of D-Day on June 5.
They will leave Portsmouth Harbor that evening and arrive in Normandy the next morning, retracing the crossing they made in 1944.
