A.Y. Jackson sold at the Heffel Fine Art Auction in Toronto last night but a historic canvas by French Master Henri Matisse did not
The Matisse, an oil from 1919 of a woman in an arm chair on a balcony, was expected to go for upwards of $5.8 million, but highest bid was $3 million which fell short of the consignor’s minimum price.
Three paintings by Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson did sell for more than $672 thousand. The Art Gallery of Ontario, which owned the paintings, will receive $557-thousand less the seller’s commission.
Heffel says it is still accepting offers for any unsold works. They’ll be forwarded on to the consignor who can then choose to accept them or not.
