General Motors will end production at its Oshawa plant by the end of this year as planned, but the facility is being repurposed.
The automaker’s announced it will invest $170-million to transform the plant from one that makes vehicles to stamping, sub-assembly and autonomous vehicle testing.

Unifor national president Jerry Dias calls the agreement ”innovative” and a partial victory but admits it’s far from a perfect solution.
GM Canada President Travis Hester says the move will save 300 of 2,600 union jobs at the plant, with the potential to grow and attract more jobs as the facility attracts new customers.
The automaker will establish a jobs action centre in June to help employees plan for their future.
Provincial economic development minister Todd Smith says the government’s rapid re-employment training service will support those workers who will lose their jobs.
