Former Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs star Leonard ‘Red’ Kelly died this morning.
The NHL said in a statement that Kelly’s career is ”so storied and distinguished … it may never be duplicated.”
The inaugural winner of the Norris Trophy for best defenseman, Kelly won his first four Stanley Cups with Detroit in 1950, ’52, ’54 and ’55.
A trade to the Maple Leafs saw him move up to play centre where he helped Toronto win Cups in 1962, ’63, ’64 and ’67.
Kelly also coached the LA Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Maple Leafs.
