The Ford government’s contemplating giving the city of Toronto ”one-time” help to help ”mitigate some of the financial impacts” of recent funding changes for public health units.

In a letter sent to city officials, Ontario’s chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams suggests city hall has the population and density to pick up a larger share of costs, but, that it’s also considering ”providing one-time funding to help mitigate some of the financial impacts” of recent funding change.s

Williams also says the province puts the impact on Toronto this year to around $25-million, about $40-million below city estimates.

As of April 1 this year, Toronto Public Health programs that were three-quarters or fully-funded by Queen’s Park will now be split 60-40 between the province and city, then shifting to 50-50 in 2021.

Mayor John Tory is calling on the province to reconsider its changes to cost-sharing.
