Add the city of Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health to the list of those opposing the province’s planned cuts to public health funding.
The Ford government notified health units late last week that it will reduce cost-sharing from levels of 100% or 75%, to 60 to 70% for some municipalities.

Dr. Eileen de Villa says public health initiatives may appear to be invisible because when they work, they prevent disease, so it’s easy to take them for granted.
She adds public health units also play a key role in relieving pressure on the province’s primary care system by ensuring residents don’t become ill.
Board of Health chair Joe Cressy has said the changes mean an immediate cut of $86-million from Toronto’s public health budget and a total of more than $1-billion over a decade.
The province disputes the city’s numbers and accuses Cressy of fearmongering.
