Members of Mayor John Tory’s executive committee are expected on Tuesday to endorse a city report which calls for the King Street Pilot Project to become permanent.

Mayor Tory said last week, the project has been a success in making King Street a vital transit route.

Since November 2017, streetcars have been given priority on King Street between Bathurst and Jarvis Streets, while vehicular traffic is forced to turn right at every major intersection. There is also no longer parking on King street in this stretch, which has frustrated restaurateurs, including Al Carbone. The owner of the Kit Kat Italian Bar and Grill acknowledged to Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer the restaurants are busy before show times, but quiet at other times.

But Mayor Tory says the city staff report shows restaurant business has only decreased by 1.2 percent, and retail business has actually increased during the pilot.

If approved at the executive committee, the permanent change to King Street will be presented before full city council for a final vote.
