In a surprise move, prosecutors in Chicago have dropped all charges accusing black and gay actor Jussie Smollett of lying to police about a racist and homophobic attack.

The ”Empire” actor was indicted by a grand jury on 16 felony counts related to making a false report that he was attacked in January by two men who shouted racial and homophobic slurs.
His lawyers say their client’s record ” has been wiped clean.”
Mayor Rahm Emanuel calls the decision ”a whitewash of justice.”
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson accuses prosecutors of choosing to ”hide behind secrecy and broker a deal to circumvent the judicial system.”
Meanwhile, Smollett maintains he’s been truthful and consistent since Day 1.
“I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I have been accused of,” added Smollett.
Prosecutors have not explained the reason for the decision nor said if they still feel he orchestrated the incident.
