In making the announcement at the Ontario Science Centre, Education Minister Lisa Thompson says the changes will ”modernize” the classroom, ”protect” the future of education and will ensure students acquire the skills required to build successful lives, families and businesses.
After consultations, that began in January, the government has decided to keep the current class sizes for kindergarten and Grades 1 – 3.
They will increase by one in Grades 4 – 8 and by 6 to 28 in high schools.
The government says high schools in the province have one of the lowest student-to-teacher ratios in the country and that the change will be phased in over four years.
The education minister promises not one teacher will lose their job because of the class size strategy, though she would not say if the province would rely on attrition to reduce costs.
A new math curriculum for all grades will be phased in over four years with the focus on basic concepts and skills.
A new sex-ed curriculum will replace the interim one brought in last year after the Ford Conservatives repealed the one brought in by the previous Wynne Liberals.
The new curriculum will teach students about consent in Grades 2 and 3, gender identity and expression in Grade 8.
It’ll also include teaching on abstinence, lessons on cannabis and earlier discussions on body image.
