Privy Council Clerk Michael Wernick has told Commons justice committee investigating SNC-Lavalin affair that the initial media report, that alleged political interference in the criminal prosecution of the Quebec engineering giant, had ”errors” and in some cases ”is simply defamatory.”

Wernick, Canada’s top civil servant, also testified he never witnessed any inappropriate pressure on former attorney-general and justice minister Jody Wilson-raybould by the prime minister or any officials in the Prime Minister’s Office.
”At every opportunity, verbally and in writing in December, the prime minister made it clear that this was the decision for the minister of justice to take.  She was the decision-maker,” added Wernick.
He repeated insisted there was no inappropriate pressure placed on her at any time, and that if she felt that way, she could have filed a complaint with the ethics commissioner or reported any perceived wrongdoing to Trudeau.
However, in his opening remarks to the committee, Wernick said he’s worried about the state of politics in Canada right now, and where things are headed.
What also concerns him is what he sees as the rising tide of incitements to violence with people using terms like ”treason” and ”traitor” in open discussions.
”Those are the words that lead to assassination,” he continued.
”I’m worried that somebody’s going to get shot this year during the political campaign.”
