Prosecutors want self-confessed serial killer Bruce McArthur to receive a life sentence with no chance of parole for 50 years.
First-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years, but when there are several convictions, the court can decide to impose consecutive parole ineligibility periods.
Justice John McMahon will decide whether the sentences will be served consecutively or concurrently Friday at 10 a.m.
McArthur pleaded guilty last week to the murders of eight men with ties to the city’s gay village.

Meanwhile, a Toronto police officer, facing professional misconduct charges in connection to the McArthur investigation, is requesting an judge hear the case.
Sgt Paul Gauthier’s lawyer has told a disciplinary tribunal the matter should go before an independent adjudicator rather than a police superintendent assigned by Chief Mark Saunders.
The charges are in relation to a 2016 encounter between Toronto police and McArthur, who was arrested after a man reported he tried to strangle him during a sexual encounter.
However, McArthur was released with no charges and went on to kill two men in 2017.
