The province’s police watchdog says Toronto police had reason in opening fire on the man who went on a deadly shooting spree in Greektown last summer and were not responsible for his death.

The Special Investigations Unit says there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges in the death of Faisal Hussain, adding based on the evidence, it’s satisfied that the 29-year-old gunman took his own life.

Director Tony Loparco says there’s no evidence that the officers’ actions were ”anything but commendable in the face of truly perilous circumstances.”

The SIU’s report says after exchanging fire with officers, Hussain ran off and fatally shot himself.

The agency reached its conclusions after interviewing 15 civilian witnesses, 7 officers, reviewing surveillance video, in-car camera footage, Hussain’s autopsy report as well as a firearms report.

18-year-old Reese Fallon, 10-year-old Julianna Kozis were killed and 13 were wounded in the popular Danforth Avenue neighbourhood the night of July 22, 2018.
