Ontario’s Divisional Court has denied a request to quickly deal with a case trying to force the province’s Ombudsman to investigate the appointment of a close friend of the premier as OPP commissioner.
Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair had previously asked Ombudsman Paul Dube to investigate the hiring, citing concerns about political interference by Doug Ford.
When that request was denied, Blair went to court to attempt to force Dube to investigate.
But Justice Herman Wilton-Siegel ruled Blair’s lawyer Julian Falconer failed to establish urgency in order to expedite the case, but that it should be dealt with in a timely fashion.
Falconer expects that to be April or May.
The province’s integrity commissioner has already launched a probe.
Premier Doug Ford, who has denied any involvement in the appointment of Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner, has said it will take effect as soon as the integrity review is done.
Ford calls the OPP commissioner’s job a ”political appointment” and Blair’s reaction ”very disappointing”.
