The Art Gallery of Ontario has announced it is selling off 20 paintings by Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson to make room for more art by under-represented artists.
Other Canadian galleries are being given first right to buy at a preferential rate before the sale is potentially taken to public auction.
The AGO isn’t identifying which paintings it’s selling, but assures that Jackson’s work will continue to have strong representation at the gallery.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to buy works for the AGO’s “Indigenous and Canadian Art Collection,” but the specific purchases have yet to be confirmed.
