There is optimism for the Green Party of Canada ahead of the federal election in October.

Pollsters say the Greens could be on the verge of their best election finish since the party was founded 35 years ago, given voter frustration with traditional politics and mainstream parties.

The recent byelection in the eastern Ontario riding of Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes saw the Green candidate come within 24 votes of the New Democrats.

To date, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is the only Green Party candidate ever to win a seat in parliament.

Ontario Green Party leader Mike Schreiner broke through for the first ever seat for the Greens in the Ontario legislature this past June. Schreiner is the MPP for Guelph.
