Zoomer Radio News reported earlier this month about an investigation which revealed that 1400 Canadians have died since 2008 in incidents involving various types of medical devices. In some cases, these devices had been pulled from the market in other countries.

Another 14,000 injuries were reported during that same ten year period.

Now an action plan has been announced at Health Canada to improve the safety of medical devices, such as pacemakers and breast implants.

The plan proposes a number of steps aimed at boosting the safety, quality and efficacy of medical devices. These include improving how the products get to market, strengthening follow-up monitoring of those already in use, and providing more information about devices to patients.

The strategy also involves putting in place regulations that will mandate that all hospital administrators across the country report serious adverse incidents related to medical devices to Health Canada.
