Global Affairs Canada says Canada’s ambassador to China, John McCallum, met with former diplomat Michael Kovrig in Beijing.
The department is not providing any other details, citing privacy laws.
Canadian officials are still pressing the Chinese for access to Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor, who’s also being detained following Canada’s recent arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.
The two were arrested on what China describes as suspicion of ”engaging in activities that endanger the national security.”
The development follows Tourism Minister Melanie Joly’s announcement that she won’t go to China to mark a year of exchanges between the countries.
Neither government’s mention growing tensions sparked by Meng’s arrest but just yesterday Joly said the trip was still on.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan are in Washington where they met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis as Canada continues to get squeezed by the trade dispute between the U.S. and China.
