Markham and Mississsauga have voted against retail cannabis stores.
Online sales started in Ontario October 17th – but privately run pot shops will be allowed as of April 1st.
The province has given municipalities until January 22nd to opt-out.
Mayor Bonnie Crombie says while Mississauga city council feels it’s too early to say yes to the current set up – her city could choose to opt-in at a later date.
Toronto city council is set to consider this tomorrow.
While Mayor John Tory says it makes sense to allow retail cannabis stores – he still believes municipalities should have greater control over where they go.
A staff report is recommending Toronto not opt-out… saying that would encourage the illegal market.
