Ontario’s healthcare wait times are no longer the shortest in the nation.

A new Fraser Institute report reveals that patients in this province are waiting an estimated 15.7 weeks for medically necessary treatment.

Saskatchewan now has the shortest wait times at 15.4 weeks, while the median wait time across Canada is at 19.8 weeks.

The study examines the total wait time patients face across 12 medical specialties, from referral by a family doctor to consultation with a specialist, to when the patient ultimately receives treatment.

Ontario still holds the shortest wait times in Canada for cancer treatment at 3.2 weeks, but the longest for orthopaedic surgery at 29.7 weeks.

Study author Bacchus Barua says it’s time for policy makers at Queen’s Park and in Ottawa to reform the outdated policies that contribute to long wait times.
