”It’s clear that something has to change,” said the chief, who adds the service wants to make impaired driving even more socially unacceptable, reduce the number of charges and prompt more members of the public to notify police when they encounter drivers under the influence.
On the weekend, 16 motorists in York Region were charged with 27 related offences.
So far this year, police north of Toronto have laid over 1,400 impaired driving charges.
Five people have been killed in crashes this year where impairment was believed to be a factor.
Durham Police have been publishing names of alleged impaired drivers for 10 years, while Halton Police have been doing so for more than a year.
