Former premier Kathleen Wynne testified before a legislative committee looking into what her successor has called ”the biggest political cover-up in Ontario’s history.”
The committee’s investigating the difference between the Wynne government’s projected deficit this year and the $15-billion the Ford government says is the real number.
Conservative committee members questioned Wynne about her regime’s ”Fair Hydro Plan,” which aimed to reduce electricity rates by 17% by refinancing the costs of hydro projects through Ontario Power Generation’s books, instead of the province’s.
”Whose idea was it to keep the accounting of the Fair Hydro Plan off book?  Do you own the decision?” asked PC MPP Roman Baber.
”I take full responsibility for the Fair Hydro Plan in all of its aspects,” replied Wynne.
The former premier testified her actions were motivated by wanting to solve the challenge many Ontarians were facing with electricity prices.
”Did I recognize it as a political problem?  Yes I did.  But at its base it was a human problem that needed to be resolved by government,” Wynne added.
The committee, whose creation was announced by Doug Ford in September, is calling witnesses and gathering evidence for a final report expected later this month.
