Cases of pneumonia appear to be on the rise in this country.

A new report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information says for the first time in at least five years pneumonia was one of the top ten reported reasons Canadians went to hospital emergency departments last year.

There were nearly 135,000 pneumonia-related ER visits reported across Canada in 2017-18, marking a 13 percent increase from the year before. And more than 1 in 4 of these visits resulted in the patient being admitted to the hospital for at least one night.

The report also finds older adults made up two-thirds of pneumonia-related visits for admitted patients last year.

Health Institute director of Acute and Ambulatory Care Information Services Greg Webster says “pneumonia is a serious illness and continues to be a concern in emergency departments.” He goes on to say that “as we approach the colder months, this report is a reminder to all Canadians to take action to prevent pneumonia.” Webster says practicing good hygiene, getting vaccinated, and following advice from public health units are all good tips.

Abdominal and pelvic pain, throat and chest pain and acute upper respiratory infection were the top three main reasons for ER visits in 2017.
