Soon after Unifor President Jerry Dias came out of a meeting with General Motors concerning its announcement that the Oshawa plant was closing at the end of next year, he told a union hall packed with members what his message was to GM.
”They are not closing our damn plant without one helluva fight,” said Dias to cheering, flag waving auto workers at local 222 in Oshawa.
Dias adds he’s likely meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tomorrow.
”We have to use every trick, every tool … we’re going to have to use all of the power of government to make sure that General Motors understands that they’re not betraying this country again.”
Automotive consultant Denis DesRosiers told Zoomer Radio’s ”Fight Back” with Libby Znaimer, he’s not surprised by the announcement.
”In no way shape or form.  I may be surprised at the timing but the decision itself was inevitable … at one point these plants in Oshawa produced a million vehicles.  That’s dropped by 85%.  Last year they were under 150,000.  Anybody who thought that this had long -term survival, maybe they were smoking something before (Prime Minister) Trudeau made it legal,” DesRosiers told Zoomer Radio.
Premier Doug Ford says the province won’t be offering money to keep the plant going and will instead increase unemployment insurance and step up retraining to help those affected find new jobs.
