The Texas woman, who inspired the 1958 Buddy Holly song ‘Peggy Sue’, has died.

Ten years ago, Peggy Sue Gerron of Lubbock released her autobiography ”Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?  A Memoir by Buddy Holly’s Peggy Sue” to mark the song’s 50th anniversary.

She said she and Holly were good friends.

”He was probably one of the best friends I every had,” said Gerron.

She married the drummer in Holly’s band The Crickets, Jerry Allison, though they later divorced.

Her son-in-law said ”Peggy Sue” initially had a different name.  That it originally was going to be Cindy Lou (Holly’s niece) and that Allison wanted to impress Peggy Sue so he got Buddy to change it.

Holly died in a 1959 plane crash in Iowa that also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. ”The Big Bopper” Richardson.
