The American-based owner of Town Shoes, DSW Inc. (Designer Shoe Warehouse), plans to close its 38 stores in Canada by the end of its fiscal year in January.
(DSW CEO Bruce Dinan / National Post files)
Town Shoes was created in Toronto in 1952 by Leonard Simpson.
About 400 workers are expected to be affected but DSW hopes to find them other employment through its Shoe Company, Shoe Warehouse and DSW brands.
DSW bought 49.2% in Town Shoes in May 2014 for $75.5-million and purchased the remaining stake last May for $44.7-million.
Based in Ohio, DSW says increasing competition and ”significant” operating losses are to blame for the move.
