Toronto’s Mayor has launched a new pedestrian initiative called the “Leading Pedestrian Interval Program” as part of his Vision Zero plan for the city.
The program gives pedestrians a five second head start in crossing the road which in turn allows drivers the opportunity to see the pedestrians, before the light turns green for vehicles.
Tory says the program has reduced pedestrian deaths by up to 60% in some places and says it will bring Toronto closer to the Vision Zero goal of no pedestrians deaths by 2021.
Tory hopes to have the program operating in at least 80 intersections in the city by the end of the year.
