A rare sitting of the Ontario Legislature begins Wednesday under the new Doug Ford Progressive Conservative government.

First order of business will be for all MPPs to choose a speaker ahead of Thursday’s Throne Speech.

Government House Leader Todd Smith says the legislature will sit for at least a couple of weeks this month.

He’s also outlined the first three priorities for Ford’s government; bring an end to the long running strike at York University, remove Ontario from its environmental alliance with Quebec and California and cancel a controversial wind project in Prince Edward County.

NDP critic Peter Tabuns says the opposition is adamantly against closing cap and trade.

“We are not going to break contracts. We made that clear in the gas plants scandal. We know what the consequences of that kind of activity are. And with regard to the York strike, they’re not proposing anything in terms of investing in colleges and universities so that we reduce the temperature in those institutions and reduce the conflict,” Tabuns explained to reporters.

As for Premier Ford’s campaign promise to fire the head of Hydro One, this is not on the agenda for now, neither is repealing the sex ed curriculum and selling beer and wine in corner stores.
