Officials in Quebec say the sweltering heat and suffocating humidity that have blanketed Eastern and Central Canada has now contributed to the deaths of at least 17 people over the last few days.

That number is up from 16 earlier today.

Montreal health officials say there have been 12 heat-related deaths there since the weekend – while authorities in the Eastern Townships region east of Montreal – are attributing another five deaths to the extreme weather.
