A 98 year old Newfoundland man got the birthday surprise of a life time Sunday while in the front row of the hit stage production Come From Away at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre.
Harry Whalen leapt out of his seat for a standing ovation when the cast and audience sang to him for his special occasion. Harry even did a little jig as cast set up the group sing-a-long.
Whalen had watched the show with his wife of 68 years by his side, along with daughter Cynthia who organized the surprise.
“I sent an email to Mirvish and it says they take three to four days to get back and they got back to me within an hour,” Cynthia Whalen said. “We can’t thank everybody enough.”
After the show, Harry said he loved the surprise, calling it “fantastic!” Come From Away is the tale of Gander, Newfoundland hosting over 6500 airline passengers after the September 11th attacks.
