Toronto’s mayor says drivers of vehicles need to pay more attention to cyclists and pedestrians sharing the roads.

John Tory’s comments come after a 58 year old woman was killed in a crash with a flatbed truck while riding her bike yesterday at Bloor and St. George.

“They are surrounded by two tonnes of steel or more if it’s a truck and people just aren’t used to making the adjustment that you have to make now to make sure you look over your right shoulder to check what’s going on in the bike lane. It is an adjustment from what was going on twenty years ago,” Tory explained.

Mayor Tory announced Vision Zero two years ago, with a goal to reduce traffic deaths to zero by 2021.

This year so far, 21 cyclists or pedestrians have been killed on city streets, exceeding the number killed by this date in 2017 and 2016.

In addition to the cyclist killed in Toronto Tuesday, a man in his 40s was killed while riding his bike last night in Markham on Elgin Mills between Kennedy and McCowan.
