Senators are scheduled to vote on the Trudeau government’s landmark cannabis legislation Thursday night.

The governing Liberals in Ottawa have averted a potential confrontation with indigenous senators which could have delayed the legalization of recreational marijuana this summer.

Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor and Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott sent a letter addressing concerns of indigenous community members who complain they have not been adequately consulted. The Ministers have also pledged more funding for Indigenous mental health and addiction treatment services along with other considerations for indigenous businesses working through the licensing process.
