A large study out of Denmark is adding to evidence of a link between traumatic brain injuries and dementia later in life.
Repeated head injuries and severe head injuries posed the greatest danger in a study involving almost 3,000,000 people in Denmark.
Overall, the risk was small; about 95% of people with a brain injury never developed dementia. But the study found a single severe brain injury increased the risk of later dementia by 35% compared with a person who never had a brain injury. A mild brain injury increased the risk by 17%.
The lead researcher concludes the findings show that each additional brain injury does add to the danger.
The research is published in the journal “Lancet Psychiatry.”
