Ontario’s environmental watchdog says efforts need to be increased – to shift the province away from fossil fuels to low-carbon sources.

Environmental Commissioner Dianne Saxe says in a report on energy conservation efforts – that the Liberal government’s long-term energy plan ignores its own climate change law.

Saxe says Ontario’s law targetting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 – would need a steep drop in fossil fuel use – by 40 to 50 per cent in the next 13 years.

Saxe says Ontario’s long-term plan predicts stable demand for electricity – but it doesn’t spell out how the province will reduce fossil fuel use.
