In light of concerns expressed by various groups within the LGBTQ community, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders has decided to withdraw an application to have civilian members and uniformed officers take part in the 2018 Pride parade.
”My hope is that this move will be received as a concrete example of the fact that I am listening closely to the community’s concerns and I am committed thoroughly to building a better, stronger relationship between us,” said Saunders in the statement the day after the groups said the presence of officers makes community members feel unsafe.

Pride Toronto executive director Olivia Nuamah says they want police to better communicate with the community rather than focus on participating in the parade.
A spokesperson for Mayor John Tory believes this is something for police and the community to work out ”with restored trust and collaboration as the number one priority.”
