A controversial plan, that would reduce the number of lanes and widen sidewalks along a stretch of Yonge Street in North York, has been put on hold.

It likely won’t be dealt with until after the municipal election this October.

Initially, city staff recommended reducing from six to four, the number of lanes between Sheppard and Finch to make room for a bike lane and wider sidewalks and a landscaped median.

But a number of councillors, including Mayor John Tory, opposed the idea.

Instead, they asked staff to come up with an alternative proposal that would see a bike lane go on Beecroft Road, which runs parallel to Yonge Street, in order to keep the number of lanes at six.

After debating that plan, city council voted 20-15 to send the matter back to staff for more study.
