SENATE GETS FIRST INDIGENOUS MEMBER FROM ONTARIO

The Canadian Senate is gaining its first Indigenous member from Ontario.

She is Metis lawyer and scholar Yvonne Boyer – who has complained of “racist assumptions” in Canada’s health system.

Boyer will fill one of a dozen vacancies in the Senate.

She co-authored a report about sterilization of seven Indigenous women in Saskatchewan – noting, that as recently as 2015 – women have been coerced into being sterilized.
