President Donald Trump says the only way Canada will be exempt from the planned tariffs on steel and aluminum is if a ”new and fair” North American Free Trade Agreement’s signed.
”If we don’t make a deal I’ll terminate NAFTA, but if I do make a deal which is fair to the workers and to the American people, that would be, I would imagine, one of the points we’ll negotiate, will be tariffs on steel for Canada and for Mexico,” said the president.
“We’ll see what happens.”
While not showing any signs of backing down or exempting Canada from the tariffs, the president says he does not envision a trade war.
Meanwhile, Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau says Canada will remain ”firm” in its opposition to the tariffs and will await official news from the White House before deciding how to respond.
Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the proposal ”absolutely unacceptable”.
