Toronto police are advising you to stay off the ice in Toronto’s Harbour because while it looks thick enough to hold you, it may in fact not be.
Toronto police constable David Hopkinson says the ice over Toronto Harbour isn’t like the ice on lake at the cottage which freezes for days on end.  In the habour, he says they regularly use tug boats to break up the ice so the ferries can run back and forth to the islands.  The danger is, when it freezes back over, it’s very thin.  If you fall through, Constable Hopkinson says emergency services take time to arrive and hypothermia sets in quickly.

Better to take your skates to Nathan Phillips Square or the new Bentway Skating Trail under the Gardiner
