When an elderly person goes missing in bitter cold weather, it usually does not end well.
Fortunately it has in the case of 84-year-old Umberto Ascenzi .
(Toronto Police Service)
He was last seen at his home in the Jane-Sheppard Avenue area around 1 a.m. and was found by a transit bus driver in Vaughan about nine hours later.
Wearing only a wind breaker, ball cap and shoes, Ascenzi, who suffers from dementia, was found shivering and appeared to have injuries to his hands, possibly frostbite.
Paramedics took him to hospital but he otherwise seemed to be fine.
Police advise anyone with a family member with dementia to take precautions to help prevent them from wandering off, such as alarms, bells or even child locks.
