Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he takes responsibility for going on a family vacation last Christmas that the ethics commissioner feels violated conflict-of-interest rules.

He adds he never thought there would be any problems when he and his family went to the private Bahamian island owned by the Aga Khan and vows to get clearance for all family vacations in the future.

Outgoing Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson’s just released report says the vacation broke law that prohibits a minister or any member of their family from accepting gifts or ”advantages” that could be reasonably viewed as influencing government decisions.

The only exception is if the person providing the gift is a friend but Dawson says that did not apply, something Trudeau disputes.

She says the Aga Khan and his foundation were registered to lobby the PM’s office last December, meaning the vacation ”could reasonably be seen to have been given to influence Mr. Trudeau in his capacity as Prime Minister.”
