It’s only been in place since November 12th, but the King Street Pilot Project is proving to be a big success for speeding up transit between Bathurst and Jarvis Streets.

University of Toronto researchers have analyzed statistics which show that during the evening rush period of 4 to 7pm, the mean travel time for westbound streetcars in the pilot area has been cut by 24 percent to just over 17 minutes from almost 23 minutes before the pilot began. The mean travel time for eastbound streetcars has been reduced by 20 percent to just under 16.5 minutes from just over 20.5 minutes.

The data also shows that during the evening rush only 1 percent of streetcars are taking longer than 25 minutes to travel between Bathurst and Jarvis. Prior to the pilot, 19 percent of streetcars took longer than 25 minutes.

U of T professor Steven Farber says from a transit perspective the pilot is achieving a goal of providing a much faster and reliable transit route to tens of thousands of people daily.

Drivers of vehicular traffic are forced to turn right at every major intersection on King street between Bathurst and Jarvis. There are indications that traffic on nearby streets has worsened slightly.
