Affordable housing advocates, including CARP – A New Vision of Aging – are applauding the Trudeau Liberals for announcing a $40-billion dollar commitment to improve social housing across Canada.

But CARP’s VP of Advocacy Wanda Morris tells Zoomer Radio News, she’s disappointed that the funding is all being pushed back to after the 2019 federal election.

“It certainly would’ve been feasible for the government to start taking action immediately and it’s too bad people have to wait before they see any relief, but hopefully it will come out shortly afterwards and seniors will have housing security, which is the cornerstone of lifting people out of poverty,” said Morris.

Morris says while housing is often seen as an issue impacting younger Canadians, many seniors live in social housing that is in disrepair, or are struggling to pay rent on fixed incomes.

She says CARP is looking forward to working with the federal government to ensure sufficient funding is allocated to meet the specific needs of seniors.
