DIRECTOR'S GUILD SAYS MORE MUST BE DONE TO STRENGTHEN DIVERSITY

Modest gains are being reported for women and minority directors in television – but the industry must do more to increase diversity.

That’s the response from The Director’s Guild of America to a new report stating that 62 per cent of nearly 4,500 television episodes reviewed during the 2016-2017 season – were directed by white men.

Non-white directors accounted for 22 per cent of all episodes directed last year – while white women were directors on 16 per cent of the episodes reviewed.

The numbers reflect small gains in the low single-digits for female and minority directors from previous seasons.

Directors Guild President Thomas Schlamme says the industry has to do more – to find diverse directors to chip away on the industry’s reliance on white directors – and if nothing else, finding diverse directors makes good business sense.
