The Trudeau government’s unveiled its proposed tax scheme on sales of recreational marijuana which is slated to become legal next July.

The Liberals recommend an excise tax of at least one-dollar per gram or 10% of the final retail price – whichever’s higher.

Scarborough Southwest Liberal MP Bill Blair, the former Toronto police chief and government’s point person on pot, says he’s satisfied the taxes being proposed will take money away from organize crime but not encourage increased pot use.

The feds and provinces could have about one-billion dollars a year in tax revenues to share but municipalities want in.

Mayor John Tory says Toronto and other municipalities should ”absolutely” receive a slice of revenue from tax revenue since ”we are the ones who will get the call for enforcement.”

Ottawa will now hold public consultations on its proposal until December 7.

Canada’s finance ministers will then meet with the aim of reaching an agreement on how best to divide marijuana tax revenues.
