A new study examines efforts to reverse a steep decline in the monarch butterfly population – by planting milkweed – which is critical to the survival of the monarch population.
It’s believed to be the only plant that the butterflies feed on – when they are caterpillars.
But the new study from the University of Guelph finds that restoring milkweed along roadways – is less effective than doing so on agricultural lands.
The research is published in the journal Biological Conservation – and looks at what monarch butterflies prefer – when it comes to laying eggs on milkweed.
